Since its construction the Castle has not undergone any form of refurbishment at all. The cost at refurbishing the castle itself would cost millions and any possible construction would be in vain as it would have to deal with competition with Bunratty Castle.
Upon visiting the castle I noticed that there was plaster and in some areas ascaffolding up on the wall. I was told this was from when they were filming the film " High Spirits". The castle itself remains in pristine condition from the outside and the current owner informed me that during the heavy storms last year, the castle remained unharmed and showed no sign of damage.
The owner of the castle informed that there are already certain aspects of the castle that are not able to be refurbished. The Earls tower, this situated to the South East is home to a Falcon Nest which is protected by the National Wildlife Society.
Visiting the castle and seeing the front of the house there is certainly an issue that stands out a mile. The large build of calcium deposits from rain landing and sitting on this stone does hinder the aesthetic potential of the castle.
A lightening rod was also installed to the top of the round tower in the light of last years storms.
The owner informed me of his desire to turn the building into a convention center but that such a task would cost millions to carry out. There is also the issue of competition from Bunratty.

What was very noticeable for me also was how a building well over 100 years old could look very modern. By modern I don't mean of course the luxuries we have in our current life but for example but what is left of the film setting has made the castle look a lot modern even though it is slightly damaged. This has also had its downfalls as anything that was original be it any windows that may have been cracked before were replaced with props for the film so the significance of the building and its features were overlooked in this sense. |
